Toddler Sonnet #1

Oh, what cuisine doth here before me lie
Betwixt the corners of my penguin plate?
For surely thou dost not expect I’ll try
This unknown meat and half a course of grapes?
By what offense have I incurred this woe?
What wrongs have wrought this terror on myself?
You claim that I need sustenance to grow
But seest thou not the pretzels on the shelf?
I raise my cry to make known my disgust,
Yet they who love me most, they close their ears.
If thou willst not relent, it seems I must
Fling up my greens away into the air.
Alas, my fate takes a most wretched turn!
A cookie sought, but not a cookie earned.

True story. Names of some food items have been changed to protect the innocent (and the rhyme scheme). Written in July 2020… on my phone… while exhausted and nursing a newborn. Do I get my best ideas when I’m exhausted?
